Internet Browsers

InfoEyes is compatible with the Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 4.0 and higher) or Netscape Navigator (version 4.x only) Web browsers. Internet Explorer users can detect which version their running by opening the Help Menu from within the browser, and selecting "About Internet Explorer." For Netscape Navigator, users can open the Help Menu, and select "About Communicator."

Operating Systems

InfoEyes is compatible with Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, or XP. MacIntosh, Linux, Unix, and other operating systems are not supported.

Privileges

Privileges are rights assigned to users that specify allowable actions on a network. An example of a privilege is the right to shut a system down. In order to run InfoEyes with Windows 2000 or NT, users will need to have local administrator privileges. For those using Windows 95, 98, or XP, InfoEyes can be loaded as long as software can be installed on the computer.

Internet Connection

InfoEyes requires an Internet connection through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Dial-up Internet connections are compatible. Broadband connections such as DSL or cable modems, are required for application sharing and video, and is recommended for audio use with InfoEyes.

Audio and Video Requirements

Computers must be equipped with speakers and a soundcard with full-duplex capabilities. A full-duplex soundcard means that your computer can process audio coming in at the same time that it is putting sound out to the speakers. Most computers in recent years have been equipped with full-duplex soundcards. Older computers (5 years and older) equipped with original 8-bit soundcards like Soundblaster, or others like Soundblaster-16, and Soundblaster Pro, may need an upgrade to run InfoEyes.

For those wishing to talk with InfoEyes staff, a microphone must be connected to your computer. For those without microphones, the text chatting option is still available while the InfoEyes staff respond via audio.

Information About the InfoEyes Plug-In

Those wishing to use InfoEyes will need to download and install a small (less than 1 MB) browser-plug. This plug-in will allow you to obtain live online reference assistance. Before downloading this plug-in, please be sure that your computer has met all the necessary system requirements mentioned above. Once your computer meets all the requirements, open the download and install the InfoEyes plug-in link. The installation automatically provides the correct plug-in for your browser (Microsoft® Internet Explorer or Netscape®):

After installation, an InfoEyes button should appear in the upper-right corner of your browser toolbar. The InfoEyes button only appears on this page and on other parts of our InfoEyes Web site. Clicking on this button will begin an audio session with a librarian. Activating the Ask a Question via InfoEyes Live Reference Session link is the equivalent function of clicking on the InfoEyes browser button.
